Looking through all the covers I did for Jim, the funniest ones were the first ones.... that carry the best anecdotes.....

“Borrowed Time”, by Alan Hruska.  This was my first book cover ever, and I was paralyzed, waiting for the phone call coming to me in Santa Cruz, California, from New York.  (way pre - email days)....... to see if I even had a chance at this new COVER ART career.  I'd sent him a Polaroid of the painting half way through.   Jim  finally calls and says "Well, you want the good news, or the bad news first"?  I'm thinking " damn, my career must already by down the drain" ..... but say to him "fire away".  He tells me the bad news is, "we have to make the woman with long flowing red hair".  She had heretofore been  beautiful and  bald.....!  Then he tells me I've got to make the guy more handsome... like a James Bond.  I'm almost passing out, I'm so relieved.  This, I can do.  Then I ask him what the good news is..... he says..... "We'll exploit the hell outta you":)
